Trance Channeling in the 19th Century

Image
Mrs. J. H. Conant (Frances Ann Crowell 1831-1875) The expression 'ascended master' is something of an enigma in relation to the ways an entity such as Ramtha is different from other transcendental communicators.  I'm not aware if there are other channelers who have described the channeling process as JZ Knight has in her autobiography A State of Mind, My Story (1987): "I was racing or flowing down a tunnel, but I couldn't see the sides.  I just remember that there appeared to be a wind taking me toward a brilliant light at the other end of the tunnel."  Trance mediums in earlier centuries wrote about being in a state of trance, sleep or unconsciousness while other personalities spoke through them.  Ramtha was quoted by JZ as having told her: ". . . you will bloom completely into that which is termed a channel.  Be it known, not that which be a medium — there are rivers of consciousness in difference between them."    In Biography of Mrs. J...

What should we believe?

In my previous article, What is enlightenment, liberation or nirvāṇa ? , I wrote: Since experiencing ourself as we really are is what is called enlightenment, liberation or nirvāṇa , if it dissolves this dream that we call our waking state, then it would also dissolve the appearance of the rest of humanity whom we experience in this dream. If the dreamer wakes up, not only is he or she liberated from the dream, but also all the people who seemed to exist in that dream world will also be liberated from it. All this reasoning is based upon our supposition that this world is all just our dream, but we cannot know for certain whether or not this is actually the case until and unless we investigate ourself and thereby experience ourself as we really are. So at present all we can say for certain is that if we attain enlightenment, liberation or nirvāṇa , it will not do any harm to the rest of humanity, and that if this world and all the people in it are just like the world and the people we ...

Ramtha, The White Book

Image
This is the cover of the 2004 edition with cover embossing shown in gray. One of Ramtha's statements in Ramtha, The White Book is: ". . . God will always be the perception of what God is, and that will always be unique for each entity." Chronicles of ascended master interaction with humanity have culminated with Ramtha 'the enlightened one' channeling through JZ Knight.  The White Book  is considered a 'general introduction to Ramtha and his teachings.'  The first version of the book,  Ramtha (1986), became known as the 'white book.'  The book was edited by Steven Lee Weinberg, Ph.D., with Randall Weischedel, Sue Ann Fazio and Carol Wright.  The book was revised and expanded for the first edition of Ramtha, The White Book in 1999.  I read the 2001 edition of the book, which includes a Bibliography listing dozens of Ramtha Dialogues that are the sources for portions of lecture transcripts dating from 1979 to 1985....

What is enlightenment, liberation or nirvāṇa?

In an anonymous comment on one of my recent articles, Self-investigation, effort and sleep , someone asked several questions, including the following: [...] What exactly is enlightenment, liberation, or nirvana, and what use is it really? [...] what effect does it have on the rest of humanity? [...] if there are very, very few (1 in a billion?) who manage to achieve liberation what is the point of it all? It seems a complete lottery to me because the Self chooses whom it will and we cannot know the basis on which it chooses. [...] He also wrote an email to me referring to this comment, so I replied answering each of the four questions he had asked, and the following is adapted from what I wrote to him: What exactly is enlightenment, liberation, or nirvāṇa ? All these terms presuppose not only the existence of their opposites, but also that each of those opposites is a problem that needs to be solved by each of these respectively. ‘Enlightenment’ presupposes that there is ignorance, ‘l...

Instant Pot Electronic Pressure Cooker: Two Years Later

Image
I've had several people tell me that the Whole Health Source post that changed their lives the most was one I published in 2012 -- about a pressure cooker. In 2012, I first reviewed the Instant Pot-- a "pressure cooker for the 21st century" that also doubles as a slow cooker and rice cooker ( 1 ).  Since then, we've used it more than 400 times, and it has saved us countless hours of kitchen drudgery.  It's indispensable for my current cooking style, and a major time saver for anyone who leads a busy life but still wants to cook wholesome food at home.  It's extremely satisfying to be able to put your ingredients into the Instant Pot, push a couple of buttons, do something else until it beeps, and then eat a healthy, inexpensive, and delicious meal. Pressure cookers are one of the most time- and energy-efficient cooking tools, but electronic versions are even more efficient than traditional stovetop pressure cookers.  They're more time-efficient because you...

A paradox: sphuraṇa means ‘shining’ or ‘clarity’, yet misinterpretations of it have created so much confusion

As a conclusion to my previous two articles, Demystifying the term ‘ sphuraṇa ’ and Self-awareness: ‘I’-thought, ‘I’-feeling and ahaṁ-sphuraṇa , I would like to observe what a paradox it is that a word that means ‘clarity’ has created so much confusion. That is, in the sense in which Sri Ramana used them, the terms ஸ்புரணம் ( sphuraṇam ) and ஸ்புரிப்பு ( spurippu ) both mean only ‘shining’ or ‘clarity’, so it is paradoxical that they have been misunderstood and misinterpreted to such an extent that their clear and simple meaning has been obscured and that they have therefore created a huge amount of confusion in the minds of his followers and devotees, particularly those who rely upon English translations and interpretations of his teachings. If the meaning of these terms as they were used by Sri Ramana had been correctly understood and explained in English books, none of the mystery and confusion that now surrounds them would have arisen. When they are correctly understood, they are ...
